Support » Networking WordPress » Moving single multisite site to different domain?

In my two-site multisite have a main site (www.mysite.com) and a second site at a subdomain (subdomain.mysite.com).

I have been working on a new version of the sub-site at dev.mysite.com (also in the multisite) which I now want to move into place as a replacement for subdomain.mysite.com

Do I just change the Site Address (URL) in the Dashboard and that’s that, or is there a better way to go about it?

When replacing a site in a WordPress multisite network with another site from the same network, simply changing the Site Address (URL) in the dashboard is not enough. You’ll need to take a few more steps to ensure a smooth transition:

Back Up: Always start with a full backup of your multisite.

Move Content: Transfer any new content from dev.mysite.com to subdomain.mysite.com. You can use the export/import tool in WordPress for this.

Update URLs: Use a plugin like Search and Replace to change URLs in the database from dev.mysite.com to subdomain.mysite.com.

    Change Site Addresses:

    • In Network Admin, go to Sites > All Sites.
    • Edit subdomain.mysite.com to a temporary URL.
    • Then edit dev.mysite.com to subdomain.mysite.com.
    • Optionally, revert the temporary URL back to subdomain.mysite.com.

Thanks, friend! That makes sense. I’ll give it a spin and see how it goes…

It occurs to me that I could simply back up the ‘dev’ site and import it into the ‘subdomain’ one to overwrite it, and then search/replace. I don’t need to change the URLs on the multisite at that point because the new content will already be at the right URL…
